- After waking up from a coma, Ugandan-born Reservist questions reports of injuries she sustained while being transported to the hospital by Columbus EMS

About 30 minutes after a United States Army Reserve specialist walked into a child’s birthday party in Columbus, Ohio, she felt some physical discomfort and promptly called 911, the American helpline for emergency service.
“I felt like my body was constricting, like how you would feel pain coming towards your chest, your heart, from your legs, from everywhere,” said Ziadah Nanteza, a four-year U.S. Army reservist. “I started to feel like I can’t breathe.”
Shortly after paramedics transported Nanteza to St. Ann’s hospital in Westerville, Ohio, the Ugandan-born Army reservist slumped into a coma. She woke up days later to discover injuries on the back of her head, backside, elbows, knees, and other parts of her body.

What happened to Nanteza between the time she was transported from the venue of the child’s birthday party and her arrival at the Emergency Room at St. Ann’s hospital has left her horrified and anxious for explanations.
“I need to find out what happened in the ambulance because when they brought my clothes, they were all full of blood,” Nanteza said after her discharge.
Battalion Chief Jeffrey J. Geither, the public information officer for Columbus Division of Fire, which oversees the city’s Emergency Medical Service (EMS), said due to “patient privacy laws” he could not respond to inquiries by Diaspora Gazette regarding Nanteza’s injuries or treatments unless she authorized such disclosures. However, Diaspora Gazette has found that the Columbus EMS report stated that while transporting Nanteza in the ambulance (Medic 33) to the hospital, she became agitated, saying she wanted her baby, and asked that they turned the ambulance around and take her back to her residence. The report also stated that an EMS crewmember attempted to calm her down, explaining that they would arrive at the hospital “in a few minutes.” In addition, the report stated that the crewmember was attempting to radio St. Ann’s hospital’s Emergency Room with a report “when patient suddenly unlatched her seat belt, jumped up off the cot, grabbed the rear door latch and jumped out while M33 was moving.”
According to the EMS report, after the patient (Nanteza) landed on the road, the crewmember notified the driver of the M33 ambulance that the patient had jumped out of the moving van and was on the road. The crew member reported the incident to FAO (Fire Alarm Office) and asked for assistance. The van then stopped, turned around, and drove back toward the patient. The report further stated that the ambulance crew found Nanteza lying on the road with severe bleeding from the back of her head, awake and moaning, and that the crew applied a collar, backboard, and trauma dressing and later got the patient back on the cot and back in the ambulance.
Nanteza said the report doesn’t make sense.
“They said I became combative and I jumped out of the ambulance, but I’m supposed to be strapped three times,” she asked “If I’m jumping out of the ambulance, why don’t I have my wounds at the front of my body? I have wounds at the back of my head and bandages on wounds on my behind and my shoulders and joints; just a few of those (injuries) that I have are at the front, on my knees.”
Coleman Ssembatya, the father of the three-year-old birthday celebrant, also found the EMS report hard to believe.
“I mean, how would she fall off from the ambulance at all?” Ssembatya said. “Guys who go with patients watch the patients’ situation on their way to the hospital and after, and they strapped them.”

The admission report at St. Ann’s hospital confirmed that the army reservist was brought into the ER with traumatic injuries. According to the report, she had a bleeding posterior head wound and was “hysterical and not answering questions, somewhat combative.” The report added that she became quiet, had a seizure for about 60 seconds, and stopped breathing on her own. The hospital then began intubation, a process where a tube is inserted into the patient’s mouth or nose to open her airways and restore her breathing.
She slumped into a coma.
“When I woke up I was asking why is it a Thursday when it’s supposed to be a Sunday, and where is my son?” she asked, recalling that she had her son with her at the birthday party on Saturday night when the ambulance picked her up. She expected the following day to be a Sunday, but the note in her hospital room read Thursday.
Nanteza said she felt a sharp pain on her head.
“I asked why my head hurting and then I touched my head and found a big scar,” she said. “I need to find out what really happened to me in the ambulance because that EMS report does not make sense.”
